Wall Color For Living Room

by Michele
(Moyock, NC)

Rust Colored Sofa

Rust Colored Sofa

I can't believe I can get someone to help me!

I want to repaint my living room - my main concern is what color. The new sofa and loveseat are a soft velvety material in a beautiful rust color. We also have a dark chocolate brown recliner. We also will be purchasing new carpeting but what color to buy?

The wall color is now a medium gold and I don't like it. I think I would like to paint it a cinnamon brown color but then I'm not sure what color carpeting to match?

My favorite colors are harvest tan, spice, pumpkin, cinnamon etc.

Can you help me? I want it to look beautiful. I am 59 years old and I might not redo it again.

Thank you for any advice you can offer me.

Sincerely,

Michele

PS. Our living room is on the side of the house that receives full sun and that's why I would like a darker shade rather than just beige so that the room wouldn't reflect all sunlight. Yes, I do have room darkening shades to pull.

Andrea's Response:

Hello Michele and thank you for your question.

My initial thought was that a wooden floor would look great with your colour scheme and perhaps this is an option you could consider.

If you are sure that you want carpet then I really would suggest that you opt for a light shade such as beige or caramel to balance out the strong, deep colours in your furnishings and wall colour.

One wall paint choosing tool I really like when planning colour schemes is ColorSmart from Behr Paints.

Click on the above link and from there, choose the palette that best reflects the colour of your sofa and select a specific colour - Solar Flare for example. Using the 'Fine Tune' option, click to lighten by two shades which will give you Poppy Glow as a suitable color for the walls. This is a great little tool so I suggest you have a play with it and see what appeals.

Hope you find that helpful Michele.

Kind regards,

Andrea
