Are Oil Paintings Out Of Fashion?

Still Life In A Contemporary Living Room

Still Life In A Contemporary Living Room

I have some beautiful landscape and still life oil paintings that hung in my parents home and was wondering if this type of art work is "out" for decorating?

Andrea's Response

Generally speaking I would say that still life and landscape oil paintings suggest a traditional style and are best suited to a room or property which heavily features dark wood and perhaps antique furniture.

A more contemporary style property is more often associated with modern art with bolder colours and a less photo-realistic style.

That said, as you can see from the picture above a traditional style painting can look great when teamed with modern furnishings and if it were me, I would throw away the rule book and furnish my home with whatever pleased me.

If I had a modern sofa I loved but also had an oil painting that brought back memories of my family and happy days I would want them both in my home and I guess that is what makes the difference between a house and a home.
